NetBSD

A seminal Berkeley unix project that created much of today's scene. Release 0.8 was April,1993. It was the first multi-platform implementation.

Open's Theo de "Rant" split from these guys in 1994 and formed openBSD a world wide development group.

FreeBSD

We just started running a FreeBSD VPS at a secret location so we are working with Free on a daily basis.
It's a great system for beginners - lots of info freely given.
The Complete FreeBSD by Greg Lehey is an excellent start-up guide.

Mac's OS X is based on freeBSD

Battle of the Unix Geeks

We recently took up learning the Unix operating system as a way to combat brain atrophy. We settled on OpenBSD for a number of reasons, one of which was that it sucessfully installed! The logic of the system grows on you.Think of it as systems of interlocked files run by other files.

BSD stands for Berkeley Software Distribution. (It's a long but interesting tale, involving Berkeley proto-hackers versus the mother of all monopolies, AT&T!!!)

There are three main "flavors" of BSD doing quite well, each with it's own dedicated user community. (sidebar) ☞

While you think you are getting a particular flavor of a "Unix" what you are really buying into is a family feud! Demons, white knights and pufferfish are whacking each other with ones and zeros like there is no tomorrow! Greed and evil Corporations get the inevitable mention as well.

Cracking the unix code:

Unix comix from openBSD

Hey Kids! Look! These fish are, like, symbolic! Look for clues like red hats, demons and penguins. If you can figure out the lyrics you are deeper into unix than may be good for your health!

Here's a slice from the "Iwo Jima" NetBSD logo that was considered too controversial for commercial use.
